In a "plea bargain", the prosecution will offer you a deal as an incentive to plead guilty. Plea bargaining allows the prosecution to obtain guilty pleas in cases that might otherwise go to trial.
There are two types of plea bargain: charge bargain and sentence bargain.
In a "charge bargain" the prosecution will let you "plead guilty to a lesser charge," or to only some of the charges that have been filed against you. If you are charged with Drunk Driving and Driving With License Suspended, you may be offered the opportunity to plead guilty to just the drunk driving charge. In a "sentence bargain", you will be told in advance what your sentence will be if you plead guilty.
A plea bargain is a contract between the prosecution and you. Both parties are required to comply with the terms of the contract. In a plea bargain, you will be required to perform particular tasks (such as pleading guilty on a particular date, cooperating in the investigation of another offense, or testifying against a co-defendant). If you do not perform your part of the deal, the prosecution can revoke the plea bargain. If the prosecution does not perform its obligations under the deal, you may seek to have your plea set aside, or may seek a court order requiring the prosecution to respect the plea bargain.
